The AMI provides funding for projects to develop business management tools,
products, information, resources and training for farm families, farm managers
and farm business advisors.
The strategic priorities of the Agricultural Management Institute are to:
- raise the profile and adoption of business management best practices in
the Ontario agriculture industry.
- provide Ontario farmers and their advisors with the business management
and risk management tools, products, information, resources and training
they need to enhance decision-making and farm profitability.
- develop and extend business management tools, products, information and
resources through partnerships with producer groups, research institutions
and the financial services sector.
- ensure that business management tools, products, information, resources
and training developed within the AMI, and which have applicability beyond
the province, and are shared in other jurisdictions
AMI projects are reviewed by a 12-member Advisory Panel. Projects fall into
one or more of the five key areas of focus: Benchmarking and Business Management
Best Practices; Management of Business Risk; Business Succession Planning and
New Entrants; Human Resources Development; and Training, Innovation and Market
Opportunities.
Funding for the AMI is provided in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs under the Agricultural
Policy Framework, an agreement among federal, provincial and territorial
governments to make Canada’s agricultural sector a world leader in science and
innovation. The Agricultural Adaptation Council (AAC) which administers the AMI,
is a non-profit coalition group of 71 Ontario agricultural, agri-food and rural
organizations.
PROJECT INFORMATION
On September 7 & 8, 2007 the AMI Panel conducted a Think-Tank Symposium entitled
“Farmers Working in Small Groups for Improved Profitability and Quality of Life”
(See website for proceedings
www.TakeANewApproach.ca ). Recommendations which were presented to the AMI
Panel outlined activities which could be undertaken to improve the uptake of
farmer led business groups in Ontario.
The Ontario experience with small, peer, farmer led groups is diverse. The AMI
Panel is aware of groups conducting activities in Ontario however, the sharing
of information such as getting started, successful approaches, areas to avoid
and other experiences have not be communicated. Therefore this Request For
Proposals (RFP) is requesting a consultant to develop a Farm Management Group
Resource Book.
The aim of the Resource Book is to organize helpful information that can be
applied by other farmers who may want to start their own farm business
management group. The resource book would provide advice, lists of resources,
contacts and guidelines regarding the creation and operation of various types of
groups. Information would be incorporated from the AMI symposium on small farmer
led business management groups along with additional information from other
experiences and success stories from other regions.
