Specified Risk Material Segregation/Central By Products Ltd.

The purpose of this project is to create a business plan between two rendering facilities in Perth and Oxford Counties, allowing segregation of Specified Risk Materials (SRMs).

This marketing project aims to develop a strategy to launch velvet antler products into Western Ontario’s consumer and pet market.

Soybean Rust Strategy for Ontario/Ontario Soybean Growers

The purpose of this project is to educate soybean producers in the province on the biology, identification, and management of Asian soybean rust.

Fruit ‘N Walnut Salad Marketing/Pride Pak Canada Ltd.

The purpose of this project is to market processed Ontario apples through McDonalds’s Restaurants across Canada.  The apples will be sliced and included as part of a “Fruit ‘N Walnut Salad”.  The target audience is McDonald’s 12 million Canadian customers.

Ozone Dairy Tank Washing & Sanitizing/Noblewood Transport Ltd.

This pilot project aims to determine if using ozonated water can be as effective as chemicals to clean dairy tanks.  This project would serve to fine tune the existing process for optimum efficiency and recycle up to 85% of the wash-water.

Enhancing Vaccine Efficacy/Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization

This project aims to continue building on discoveries made in previous studies showing that the delivery of needle-free vaccines and therapeutics to livestock is feasible and has advantages over conventional delivery systems.

On Farm Fibre Processing/ Wellington Fibres

To build a fibre mill in Elora that has the capacity to process about 30 pounds of fibre per day. The goal is to  provide a cost effect facility to process fibre and to hold educational seminars and workshops.

Voluntary Johne’s Disease Milk Testing Program/Ontario Dairy Herd Improvement

Through practicing veterinarians 80 dairy herds will be selected to complete testing for Johne’s Disease (JD) through milk samples.  Once results are available OMAF veterinarians will access the farm and suggest changes to reduce JD -  they will complete a risk assessment form, and provide feedback on best management practices.

 

Development of a Value Chain for Production Strawberries for Wholesale Markets/Ontario Berry Growers’ Association

To develop a coordinated marketing strategy that will eventually provide year-round marketing of strawberries from within Ontario, and develop systems so that Ontario strawberry growers can produce for a five-month period from mid-May through the end of October.

Juice Grape Revitalization/Grape Growers of Ontario

This project will support the establishment of domestic processing and a complimentary Concord and Niagara grape marketing initiative focused on grown in Ontario product and the functional food properties of grapes to revitalize the Juice Grape industry.

Management of the Cabbage Seed Pod Weevil and Swede Midge in Spring and Winter Canola/Ontario Canola Growers Association

To develop management practices for both cabbage seed weevil and swede midge in winter and spring canola, with the incorporation of both insecticide options and agronomic approaches, including biological control, to reduce damage from these pests.

Agricultural Media Initiative/Kemptville College, University of Guelph

To undergo a communications initiative to enhance coverage of farm and agri-food issues by producing a bilingual, weekly package of between two to five, 300 word articles to be distributed free, to all rural and community media in Ontario.

Vineyard and Winery Research Initiative Feasibility Study/Wine Council of Ontario and Grape Growers of Ontario

To create a new system to coordinate research for Ontario’s grape and wine industry. This project includes an analysis of current practices and standard operating procedures from various regions and sectors around the world, industry surveys, databases and focus groups and consensus based recommendations.

Gaining Ground/The Oat and Barley Council of Ontario

To increase communication between the production sectors (including plant breeding, seed industry, producers and elevators) and the utilization sectors (processing, ingredient marketing, manufacturing) in order to develop value added chains for oats and barley.

Evaluation of production, reproduction, disease resistance, and profitability of crossbred Holstein heifers in larger dairy operations in Central and Western Canada/ Gencor

National IPM Strategy for the control of anthracnose for the Canadian dry bean industry/Pulse Canada Collective Outcome – AAC Lead Council

This project focuses on the development of a national integrated pest management strategy for the control of anthracnose.
Managing the Message: Emerging issues in the Maple Syrup Industry/Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association $66,853 Through increased educational resources to the general public, development of educational materials, increased technological support and increased producer awareness, the Association hopes to emphasize quality production methods of Ontario maple syrup producers.
Bale-Board/Think Plastic Inc. $200,000 loan

$30,000 grant
This project will collect used plastic bale wrap material from established municipal sites, free of charge to producers. The materials will be condensed at the manufacturing facility, then extruded into solid plastic lumber board called “Baleboard”.
Investigating the Market Potential for Natural Veal/Ontario Veal Association $34,250 This project will investigate and make recommendations on whether the Ontario veal industry should develop a “natural” veal program, and how such could be accomplished.
