BACKGROUND
Through the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), the federal and
provincial governments have agreed to provide “wedge funding” for the
province’s companion programs. The Canada-Ontario Research and
Development (CORD) Program is one program under the companion fund. The
CORD Program is intended to invest up to $35 million until March 31,
2008 and not beyond.
Since 1996 the CORD funding has been administered by the Agricultural
Adaptation Council (AAC) on behalf of the federal and provincial
government.
CORD OBJECTIVES:
• Improve the long-term competitive position, and increase the diversity
of the Ontario agriculture and food sector;
• Increase industry self-reliance, self-determination, and to help
reduce the need for government income support measures in the future;
and
• Build on the close working relationships between the agri-food and
research communities to ensure that limited research and extension funds
are spent in an optimal fashion.
CORD PRINCIPLES:
• Are consistent with federal and provincial policy directions, acts,
regulations and environmental directives such as sustainable
development, innovation and reporting results to Canadians.
• Are within the mandate of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), as
defined under the Agriculture and Agri-Food Act.
• Are consistent with international, domestic and trade commitments and
minimizing the exposure to countervail.
• Avoid duplicating, overlapping or replacing, but could augment,
federal and provincial activities.
The CORD program is now closed.
